SANDUSKY — The Humane Society of Erie County has announced a series of upcoming events to help raise money for the group, a nonprofit that shelters homeless cats and dogs and adopts them out.

“We receive no taxes or public monies. We rely on our donors, supporters, fundraisers and grants to operate,” the society's executive director Melissa Gundlach said.

The shelter currently houses 12 dogs and 68 cats. It charges adoption fees for animal lovers who provide the animals a home, but the money raised doesn’t go toward shelter operations — it pays for medical care for the animals, Gundlach said.

Here are the events:

  • A 5K run/walk event, Run, Walk, Brew, Rescue, the first race of the #RUNDUSKY Race Series 2022, is scheduled for 9 a.m. April 2.

The event will be in downtown Sandusky, originating at Bait House Brewery and Battery Park's parking lot just north of the city's municipal court. Well-behaved dogs on a short leash are welcome.

The $25 signup fee supports the humane society and includes a T-shirt for people who sign up early. The link to sign up is at runsignup.com/Race/OH/Sandusky/HSEC5K.

  • The 2022 HSEC Golf Scramble is scheduled for Aug. 12 at Woussickett Golf Course, Sandusky, with registration at 7 a.m. and a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

The cost is $100 per person and $400 per team. The entry fee includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, drink ticket, lunch, dinner, prizes and 50/50 ticket. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
